Richard Chicken

The Bishophill History Group have produced a lively history of a colourful local character – Mr Richard Chicken which you can download here. According to the study “Mr Micawber is one of Dickens’s most loveable characters and was based largely on Bishophill resident, Richard Chicken.”

As Richard lived opposite the Golden Ball, and Dickens regularly visited York, it is safe to assume that Charles came across Mr Chicken in the pub.

This is not so hard to believe, given that there are many colourful characters to be observed in the pub to this day!

The next meeting of The Local History Group is Wednesday, 1st July 7pm at Middletons Hotel. Anyone with an interest in local history is more than welcome.
