york roman mapFor a period of about 3 years, during the stay of two Roman Emperors, it is believed that Bishophill was the centre of the Roman Empire!

Find out more at the next meeting on Wednesday 5th November at 7pm in Lady Anne Middletons Hotel when the Local History Group discuss their new booklet on Roman Bishophill. This includes photos of local Roman finds and a summary of what is known about the important civil settlement or ‘Colonia’ that covered Bishophill & Micklegate.

There will also be info about the destruction of world-class Roman & Viking remains discovered in 1989 at the corner of Skeldergate and Micklegate (now the Queens Hotel site). Funds were not available for an adequate archaeological dig so Viking remains (better than those in Coppergate) and the remnants of a huge Roman building (the largest ever unearthed in York) were consigned to the tip to make way for an office block with an underground car park!

Bishophill Local History group meet at Lady Anne Middletons Hotel on the first Wednesday of each month. All welcome.
